Tenacity – 4 examples

“THE TEST

OF A PERSON’S CHARACTER

IS

WHAT IT TAKES TO STOP HIM.”

Keep-goingThe saying ” I am in the habit of making a way out of no way” might sound a bit arrogant. But tenacity is the quality that makes people do not give up easily and persist with determination towards a goal not matter how challenging might be or how much time it might take to complete.

Four examples from the Bible that with perseverance they achieved and gained their hearts’ desires:

1.- JABEZ (I Chron.4:10). His name means “sorrowful or sorrow-maker”. I would have said “Don’t ask” and although his prayer is not a formula to get all what I want; the last thing we read about him is that God granted his request. I want to learn to dare to ask for enlargement of territory. As somebody said “Attempt something large enough that failure is guaranteed…unless God steps in”.

2.- JACOB (Gen. 32:9-12). If I’d have been there I’d have said “Stop! You are wrestling with somebody whose finger’s touch can lame, imagine what the grip of his hand can do! Stop!”  God will always win the wrestling match, but Jacob strived with God and did prevail! What an unforgettable night he had. We see in Jacob a picture of a man renewed by the power of God.

3.- HANNAH (I Sam. 2). She is one of the two wives of Elkanah. She was childless and gave herself to prayer without external speech. Her lips moved, but there was no sound. Eli, the priest, thought she was drunk with wine. I would have said “Don’t make a fool of yourself and accept your condition”. Hannah teaches me that before the Lord we can never come as ridiculous. “Better a thousand times effective peculiarity that ineffective ordinariness” (Fred Mitchell).

4.- WOMAN WITH ISSUE OF BLOOD (Matt.9:20-22). This woman that for 12 years had suffered a disease and under Jewish law, she was considered unclean; pressed through the crowds, came behind Jesus, touched his garment and immediately was healed. I would have thought “It is too embarrasing to try“. Jesus put her on the spot, but encouraged her with the words “take heart”. This woman teaches me that I am never lost in my uncleaness, unless, for fear and a foolish decision, I remain in that condition.

There is a fine line between being tenacious and stubborn. May God grant us the wisdom to firmly grip to what it is worth, to what it will outlast our lives and bring glory to his name.
