Electricity use=Garbage

Since the middle of last year the townspeople of Camiri have to pay garbage collection fee in their electric bill. In the past, we had to voluntarily go to the city hall and pay this service; but not many people did and the river was the place where some people’s waste ended up.

I like the idea of having all pay without exception, but who ever came with the concept that electricity use is equivalent to the amount of garbage you make; that is, the more we consume electricity the more we have to pay for the garbage men to pick it up.

So, now I know that when I have the air conditioning on, use my electrical oven instead of the gas stove and microwave my meals I will have to pay a higher fee for garbage collection.

It is part of living in another culture and after 15 years I am still struggling with the idiosyncrasy and learning to accept it.
