A Toy from the past

“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him?” Matthew 7:11

This is what I wanted

This is what I wanted

“The Lord argues from the lesser to the greater. If human parents reward their children’s request with what is best for them, how much more will our Father who is in heaven do so.”  (Believer’s Bible Commentary, William MacDonald).  Many years ago I had asked my parents in a letter to the magi, as the Mexican tradition is, (no Santa Claus) a “Gusi-gusano” (Wormy worm).  This was a push trike that moved by bouncing effects. I waited for the day assured “they” would grant my petition. I still recall those days of exciting and expectant waiting, but when the day finally came, to my consternation, I saw a red pedal car under the Christmas tree, a gift my father thought was better than the worm-shape toy. He wanted the best for me.                                                                                                                                   My disillusionment was such that the story of the event has remained in the family for years, now as a blissful memento. My childlish egocentrism did not permit me to see that receiving a gift was better than nothing. I should have said “thank you” right away. It was not too long ago that I thanked my parents for giving me something better.

I  have heard and read the phrase “God knows what’s best”. I have said it to myself and others as a cognitively understood statement, but, do I really have a sense of gratitude that my heavenly Father doesn’t give me all my petitions considered in my finite mind as “the best”?  It is time for me to start enjoying to the full ALL  that I have received from Him, for it is, without doubt, the good and perfect gift from above for me today.

  1. Wow! The second gift WAS better. I think we need to remember that when we pray. Thanks!
